Industry Collaboration

Faculty members are allowed to take on consultancy assignments with prior approval of the university administration. The Faculty of Engineering has established its own commercial arm, the Engineering Design Centre (EDC), for this type of work. The EDC takes on projects that are diverse in nature, allowing members of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (DEEE) to gain experience in other fields as well. Consultants who undertake these assignments are exposed to a variety of real technical design, calibration, and pre-compliance testing problems, which helps them understand unique challenges. This experience is particularly important for our staff members, as it allows them to incorporate these real-life issues into their coursework through assignments and laboratory classes. The staff can also access real problems and design data from such assignments which can be further incorporated into teaching, tutorial, and design materials.

Local and International Symposia, Conferences and Other Activities

The department has taken several key initiatives in enhancing research and development culture in the country for a very long time. This includes the organizing of the IEEE sponsored technical conference in Sri Lanka, the IEEE International Conference on Industrial and Information Systems (ICIIS) to promote and provide opportunity to local researchers, to disseminate the knowledge and share knowledge from foreign researchers without having to bear the cost of traveling abroad. The department has also taken an initiative to provide its undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to be a part of the research culture and to contribute to the national development through research and development. As part of this initiative, it has been organizing a project symposium (Electrical and Electronic Engineering Research and Project Symposium - EEERaPS) to showcase the output of the research by its students to the industry and government.

EEERaPS

The Electrical and Electronic Engineering Research and Project Symposium has provided an ideal environment to share the knowledge created by the students with the industries and to interact with the industries to come up with solutions to similar problems in various other fields. In addition to the undergraduate projects, some graduate research projects also be showcased during this annual event, giving the industry a peek into the cutting edge technologies developed in the Department.

ICIIS

From the inception in 2006, the International Conference on Industrial and Information Systems (ICIIS) has maintained high academic standards. The conference is organized bi-annualy by the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, UOP and the IEEE-SL Central Region Subsection and sponsored by IEEE Sri Lanka Section. It is envisaged that ICIIS will continue to exapand and provide more opportunities to local researchers, to disseminate the knowledge and share knowledge from foreign participants.
