Collaborative Leap: Sri Lanka's Ambitious Move to Establish IIT Madras Branch Campus Unveiled During a Delegation's Visit

A Sri Lankan delegation, led by State Minister of Technology, Kanaka Herath, took a major step in collaboration by visiting the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) on February 5th, 2024. The delegation, accompanied by notable academics and industry leaders, aimed to solidify plans for establishing an IIT Madras branch campus in Sri Lanka.

Esteemed figures, including prominent professors and experts, Prof. Subash Jayasinghe (Dean of the Faculty of Technology, University of Ruhuna), Prof. Ajith De Alwis (Faculty of Engineering, University of Moratuwa), Prof. B.G.L.T. Samaranayake (Head of Electrical and Electronic Department, University of Peradeniya), Dr. K. Piranaharan (Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna), and Dr. Romesh Ranawana (Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Artificial Intelligence), contributed valuable insights during discussions with key figures at IIT Madras.

The visit included meetings with Director Prof. Kamakoti and Dean of Global Engagement Prof. Raghunathan Rengaswamy, as well as a tour of the Centre for Innovation to understand the institute's research and development facilities. Detailed discussions focused on the future roadmap, academic collaborations, and finalizing crucial details for the proposed branch campus. The visit is a significant milestone in fulfilling the budget promise and holds the potential to transform Sri Lanka's technological landscape, empowering future generations for national progress.
